Reading and Writing Mandarin Chinese Words

Written Chinese is well-known for its beauty and eloquence.

This section of the site describes the systems used for reading and writing Chinese. There are the phonetic systems, such as the bopomofo and pinyin, and the native Chinese words which are still in common use. The phonetic alphabets have been in use for the non Mandarin-speaking portion of the Chinese population since the early 1900's. Today, mainly, the phonetic alphabets are important for learning Chinese, and are very useful for typing Chinese (imagine typing on a keyboard with more than 70,000 keys on it).
